This year’s Twinning Association trip took us to Luxembourg. An early start at 6am from Creech St Michael meant we were able to catch an earlier train through the Channel Tunnel and arrive in a busy Luxembourg at 6pm. Our hotel, being just opposite the grandiose railway station, was conveniently right in the centre of the city giving easy access to shops and restaurants.
After a good night’s sleep we assembled in hotel foyer for our first trip to the butterfly farm and vineyard of Bernard-Massard on the River Moselle at Grevenmacher. The first thing that struck you about the butterfly farm was the temperature and humidity to be followed by sights of some extraordinarily colourful butterflies of various sizes, one of which was the size of a hand. This was followed by a visit to the cellars of Bernard-Massard that, in particular, produce a champagne like wine which we all enjoyed tasting. The afternoon was spent looking round the historic and shopping centres of the city of Luxembourg.
Sunday morning saw us visit the historic town of Vianden, with its fairy tale castle on the hill. A chairlift and a woodland walk takes you to the castle which is a rabbit warren of different rooms with fine views over the river Our. Restored from a ruin in the last century, it has since been visited by a range of celebrities from our own Queen to the late Patrick Swayze. We returned to Luxembourg though the pretty area known as Little Switzerland.
The return journey on the Monday included a stop off at Cité Europe for essential supplies before we arrived back at about 9pm. Thanks to Chris Roberton for organising the trip and our driver Glyn for a comfortable journey.
Our next event is our AGM and Soup and Puds Evening at 7.30pm on Saturday 28th November at Creech St Michael Village Hall
